What is UPSC ? 

Union Public Service Commission) is a constitutional body established by the Constitution of India to conduct examinations for the appointment of public service officers of the Government of India. Under Part-14 of the Constitution, Articles 315-323 provide for the constitution of a Federal Public Service Commission and a State Public Service Commission for the states. Established in 1 October 1926.

History Of UPSC ? 

During the Indian independence movement, one of the main demands of the nationalists was that the recruitment in the Public Service Commission should be in India, because it was then tested in England. The first Public Service Commission was established on October 1926. Public constitution was established on 26 October 1950, under constitutional provisions, when India became independent. It was given constitutional status as well as autonomy so that it could recruit qualified officers without any pressure. This newly established Public Service Commission was named 'Union Public Service Commission'.

What is work of UPSC ? 

Its main function is to select members for the public service of the Center and the States. For this it conducts various examinations. Chief among these are -

• Civil Services (Principal) Examination (In October / November) 
• Indian Forest Service Examination (in July) Indian Engineering Services Examination (in July) 
• Geologist Examination (in December) 
• Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination (in August)
